"Who's ready for dinner?": Return of the Killer Shrews

"Return of the Killer Shrews" was such an interesting find when I first stumbled onto it. I didn't even hear about a remake in the works, but since I love the original I had to give it a shot. I was shocked that it was a direct sequel to the original, and although lighter in tone it definitely carried some of the spirit.

The plot is pretty simple; a group of filmmakers return to the island where the killer shrews live and plan on filming a pilot for a reality television show. And while there, they encounter the killer shews and nearly all of them become shrew food. There are a few interesting elements to it, but that would be giving away too much I think.

If I'm honest, the initial plot doesn't really do it for me, but I guess they needed some sort of reason to get back on that island, so I it works. I thought all the actors did a fine job playing both hokey and serious. The backdrop of the island works I guess but there's something too groomed about it. I can't place my finger on it, but maybe they filmed in a public park somewhere or something.

Now what I really enjoyed was the computer generated killer shrews! No longer are we bound to force dogs to wear carpets or use just okay puppetry! These shrews look really gnarly and fierce. And they look really hungry; their ribs are very visible and they are always on the verge of starvation. Watching these killer shrews pounce on their victims and take them down as if they were wolves is lots of fun. I would have loved for there to have been a scene where the island is just overrun with shrews, but sadly we don't really get that. Rather than a swarm we get like a wolf-pack of shrews. Still though, I gotta love them. They're super cute.

I really have to recommend this movie, especially if you love the original. It's pretty easy to find online or on DVD. I believe it's on Amazon Prime too if I'm not mistaken.
