I was reminded today about how much of a nutcase Dr. Kellogg was. The man who gave us Kellog's Corn Flakes was also an anti-masturbation, anti-pleasurable sex champion who really pushed for circumcision in the US. He was also really a genius at probiotics and pioneered a great number of techniques for the sake of stomach health.
This idea that masturbation is a form of self-harm was pretty popular back in Kellogg's day. I remember reading in a Brenarr Macfadden book that he believed in that same exact notion, but he did encourage enjoying pleasure through as much sex as possible. I wonder if Kellogg's views on masturbation were based on his Adventist upbringing or his medical research. And I wonder also, why was masturbation seen as "self-harm"? From what I've read he did a lot more harm to men, women, and children in an attempt to prevent masturbation.
I really need to rewatch the movie "The Road to Wellsville" sometime soon.
